Remembering Maya Angelou (1928-2014)

In 2010, United States President Barack Obama named her the recipient of the Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor.

The author of the book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 86-year-old was a novelist, actress, professor, singer, dancer and activist.   Click here to find more about Maya Angelou.

“Shirley Temple” Drink Recipe

In honor of the cultural icon and talent who stole many hearts, a drink was created for the little curly headed dancer and actress.  At 21 years of age, she retired from the Hollywood scene and later became a United States ambassador.  On Monday, Feb. 10, she died at the age of 85.

Here’s your chance to create your own version of the non-alcoholic beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces lemon-lime soda
  • 3 ounces ginger ale
  • Dash grenadine
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Directions: Pour lemon-lime soda and ginger ale into a glass with ice cubes. Then, add a dash of grenadine. Finally, stir your refreshing drink and top it off with a cherry.
